Electrical Enclosures and Industrial Cabinets: Powder Coating Specs That Matter

An electrical enclosure is a coated product with engineering responsibilities: it must resist corrosion for decades, keep threaded holes and mating edges usable, maintain grounding contact where the design says so, and look professional on a factory floor or a building facade. Powder coating is the right answer for most of that job – if the specification handles the details that a decorative finish ignores.

Edge Coverage on Punched Sheet Metal

Enclosures are made of punched, sheared and folded sheet steel – thousands of sharp edges that attract thin coating during curing. Those edges are the first place corrosion starts on a cabinet. Specify film thickness checks at edges and cut-outs, not just on flat panels, and use a formulation with good edge coverage. For aggressive environments, consider a slightly higher film build or an edge-retentive resin.

Grounding and Fit: What Coating Must Not Interfere With

Powder is an insulator, which is usually a feature – until a bonding point needs metal-to-metal contact. Define which surfaces stay bare: grounding pads, hinge ears, door contact strips and threaded holes must be masked before coating, or treated after. Mating surfaces on doors and frames need controlled film thickness so tolerances hold; a cabinet that no longer closes properly is a coating failure as much as a rust spot.

Corrosion Classes and Film Build

Industrial enclosure specifications often reference ISO 12944 corrosion categories. For indoor industrial environments (C3), 60-80 microns of a quality polyester or hybrid is typically adequate. For outdoor cabinets, coastal sites and chemical plants (C4-C5), specify higher film build, a super-durable or specialty resin, and thorough pretreatment including zinc phosphate or an equivalent conversion layer. The category, not the brand name, should drive the spec.

Textured Finishes for Shop-Floor Products

Textured powder coatings are the default for enclosures and cabinets for good reason: they hide fingerprints, shop dust and minor handling marks, and they give a consistent, professional appearance even when panels come from different batches. Fine texture keeps the premium look, while coarse texture adds grip and maximum hiding. If the design calls for smooth gloss, plan for cleaner handling and tighter film control, because every mark shows.

Color and Brand Consistency Across Cabinets

Enclosure lines are often installed side by side for years, and replacement cabinets must match the originals. Approve a physical color master, specify the RAL or custom code with gloss range, and require batch color control within an agreed delta-E. RAL 7035 and 7032 light greys are the classic enclosure colors, but custom brand colors are common – and they must be controlled to the same discipline.

QA That Matters for Enclosures

  • Film thickness: measure on flats, edges, and around cut-outs
  • Adhesion: cross-cut test on a panel from each batch, plus impact on flat areas
  • Fit: check door gaps and hinge function on masked, coated assemblies
  • Grounding: verify specified bare areas are truly bare and conductive
  • Color and gloss: measured against the approved master under standard light
