Fencing and Gates: Architectural Powder Coating Essentials

A fence is one of the few coated products expected to survive decades with no maintenance at all. It is kicked, leaned on, hit by carts and bikes, sprayed with salt in winter and left to bake in summer sun. Specifying the coating for fencing and gates means planning for corrosion at the cut ends, impact in public spaces and color stability across very large visible surfaces – all at once.
Bare Steel vs Galvanized: Different Strategies
Bare steel needs a blast profile and a coating that carries the whole corrosion job, typically 80-120 microns of polyester or hybrid. Galvanized steel brings its own protection, but powder over zinc needs the right preparation – light sweep blasting or the correct chemical etch – or the coating can fail adhesively. Specify the substrate and its condition when you ask for a recommendation; the same powder applied to both will perform very differently.
Cut Ends Are Where Corrosion Starts
Fencing is cut, drilled and welded after coating more than almost any other product. Every cut end and drilled hole exposes bare steel, and that is exactly where rust appears first. Decide the strategy before ordering: mask and pre-cut where possible, specify touch-up systems, or accept a defined rust-at-cut-end appearance and design around it with caps and covers.
Impact Resistance for Public Spaces
Fences and gates take real physical abuse – trolleys, bikes, sports equipment, occasional vehicles. The coating must survive impacts without chipping to bare metal, because every chip is a future rust spot. Specify a formulation that passes impact testing at the intended film thickness, and prefer slightly thicker film on posts and rails where impacts are most likely.
Color Stability on Large Surfaces
A fence is a very large, continuous surface: any color difference between panels or batches is visible from a distance, and UV exposure will show chalking and fading mercilessly. Use a super-durable polyester for exterior fences, approve a physical color master, and require batch-to-batch color measurement within the agreed delta-E. Gloss should also be controlled – gloss drift between batches changes the whole visual rhythm of a long fence line.
Coastal and Winter-Salt Sites
Near the sea or on roads treated with de-icing salt, specify for corrosion class C4 or C5: super-durable resin, higher film build, thorough pretreatment and edge coverage checks. In these environments the coating system, not the fence design, decides whether the installation looks good in year five or rusts at the posts. Ask for salt spray data on the actual formulation and compare creepage at the scribe, not just headline hours.
