Film thickness is the single most important number on a powder coating specification. Too thin, and the coating fails early through rust, poor hiding or weak adhesion. Too thick, and you waste powder, risk runs, and can even make the film brittle. Here is what thickness you actually need and how it is measured.

Why Thickness Matters

A powder coating protects through its film: it blocks moisture and oxygen, hides the substrate, absorbs impact and carries the color. Corrosion protection in particular is thickness-dependent – below the minimum specified film, salt spray performance drops sharply. This is why buyers specify a range rather than a single number.
