Surface Preparation Before Powder Coating

Pre-treatment prepares the metal surface so the powder coating bonds properly and doesn’t fail early from rust or contamination underneath. It typically includes the following stages, in order:

1. Degreasing

Parts go through an alkaline or acidic cleaning bath (or spray) to strip oils, cutting fluids, and fingerprints left from machining and handling.

2. Rust and Scale Removal

Abrasive blasting, acid pickling, or mechanical descaling removes rust, mill scale, and oxide layers so the coating has a clean metal surface to grip.

3. Rinsing

Multiple water rinse stages are used between chemical steps to prevent residues from one bath contaminating the next.

4. Phosphating / Conversion Coating

The part is treated with iron phosphate or zinc phosphate (sometimes a chrome-free conversion coating) to create a microscopically rough, chemically active layer. This dramatically improves paint adhesion and adds corrosion resistance underneath the coating.

5. Final Rinse

Often uses deionized water to remove any leftover phosphate sludge or salts that could cause blistering later.

6. Drying / Dehydration Oven

Parts pass through a low-temperature oven to fully evaporate moisture before entering the spray booth, since any trapped water can cause coating defects during curing.

Why It Matters

Any oil, rust, or moisture left on the surface will show up later as poor adhesion, blistering, or corrosion creeping under the film — so this stage is where most long-term coating failures are actually prevented or caused.
