How to Import Powder Coatings from China: MOQ, Lead Time and Shipping

Importing powder coating from China is a proven way to cut material costs and gain access to custom colors – if you know what to specify, what to expect on lead time, and how to avoid the common pitfalls. Here is the practical process we walk every overseas buyer through, from first inquiry to customs clearance.

Start With a Detailed Specification

The quality of your order depends on the quality of your specification. Tell us the substrate, color code or sample, gloss level, finish, required film thickness, and the performance standards that matter – salt spray hours, QUV weathering, impact resistance. An incomplete specification is the most common cause of mismatches and returns.

Order Samples First

Before committing to a container, order small samples – typically 1-5 kg per color. Spray them on your own line or at our test center, check color under your lighting, and verify adhesion, gloss and cure for your oven. Sample approval is the single most effective way to avoid surprises in a bulk order.

MOQ and Batch Consistency

• Typical MOQ: 25-500 kg per color depending on formulation (custom colors often 100 kg+)
• Batch-to-batch tolerance: we control color difference within the agreed delta-E value
• We retain a sample of every production batch for at least 12 months for traceability
• Stock colors in the RAL range can ship faster and in smaller quantities

Lead Times to Plan Around

• Samples: 3-7 working days for standard colors, longer for custom matching
• Custom color production: 7-15 working days after sample approval
• Stock color production: usually within 7 working days
• Sea freight from Xiamen/Fuzhou to Europe or North America: roughly 25-45 days

Shipping and Documentation

Powder coating is generally not classified as dangerous goods in normal packaging, which keeps freight costs predictable. For volume, sea freight in cartons on pallets is the economical choice; samples and urgent orders go by air courier. We provide the MSDS, Certificate of Analysis, and packing list, and can supply the origin certificate and other documents your customs broker needs.

Payment and Communication

Standard terms are T/T, with a deposit and balance against the Bill of Lading copy; other terms can be discussed for long-term programs. Keep one technical contact per order – ideally the person who approved the sample – so color and specification questions are answered consistently.
