Powder Coating for Outdoor Furniture That Lasts 10+ Years

Outdoor furniture is a durability exam with no partial credit: a chair that rusts at the weld in year three is a warranty claim, a brand-damaging review, and a product that came out of the same oven as the ones that lasted fifteen years. The difference is decided before the powder ever goes on – by the resin system, the pretreatment, the film thickness and the way edges and welds are handled.
Choose the Resin System for UV, Not for Price
Standard polyester powders hold up for indoor products, but outdoor furniture needs weather-resistant systems. Super-durable polyester is the workhorse choice for chairs, tables, loungers and parasol bases, with significantly better color and gloss retention than standard polyester under sunlight. Where the specification demands the highest UV performance – coastal resorts, landmark projects – ask for a super-durable grade with a documented weathering claim, or a PVDF-based system where the project requires it.
Pretreatment Is Half the Warranty
No topcoat survives a bad foundation. Steel furniture should be degreased, blasted to a clean profile and conversion-coated; aluminum should get the appropriate chrome-free conversion treatment. The most common premature failure on outdoor furniture – corrosion creeping out from scratches and cut edges – almost always traces back to a pretreatment step that was skipped to save minutes.
Protect Edges and Welds: The Failure Points
- Edges: coating pulls back during cure, so edges end thinner – specify measuring at edges, not only flats
- Welds: clean and dress welds before coating so the film covers them without porosity
- Cut ends on tubing: mask or cap, or accept and seal them in the assembly step
- Fixing points: holes and thread areas should be masked to keep threads clean and fits tight
Film Thickness: More Is Not Automatically Better
The typical target for outdoor furniture is 60-100 microns dry film on flats, with a check at edges and welds where the real thickness matters. Thicker film improves barrier protection but increases cost and can chip more easily on impact. The right answer is a controlled range with edge checks, not the thickest coating the gun can lay down.
How Design Decides Coating Life
- Drainage: water pooling in hollow sections attacks from the inside – design drains at low points
- Sharp corners: radiused corners hold film better than square edges
- Tubing end caps: closed sections keep moisture out and reduce internal corrosion
- Stacking and packing: coated surfaces rubbing in transit damage the film before installation
Warranty-Grade Specification Checklist
- Resin system: super-durable polyester (or PVDF for landmark projects)
- Pretreatment: blast + conversion coating appropriate to the substrate
- Film thickness: 60-100 microns with edge checks
- Color and gloss: approved physical master + stated tolerance
- Testing: salt spray and QUV results for the actual formulation, plus impact and cross-cut on production samples
