QUV is the workhorse test behind those numbers: it cycles UV light and condensing moisture to simulate years of outdoor exposure in weeks. It is a powerful tool and an easy one to misread. Here is how QUV works, what it actually proves, and how to use the report when comparing coatings.
How QUV Simulates Sun and Moisture
A QUV chamber exposes panels to repeating cycles: UV fluorescent lamps (typically UVA-340, which matches the short-wavelength end of sunlight) followed by condensation or water spray to simulate dew and rain. Temperature is controlled, and total hours accumulate across cycles. The result is a rapid, standardized way to compare how coatings chalk, fade and lose gloss – but it is an acceleration, not a substitute for real outdoor exposure.
What to Measure: Gloss Retention and Delta-E
The two numbers that matter most in a weathering report are gloss retention and color change. Gloss retention is the percentage of the original 60-degree gloss remaining after the test; a good exterior system holds 70-90% or more at the claim point. Color change is reported as delta-E against the original panel – the lower the better, and a few units of shift is the practical threshold where a color visibly differs on a large surface.
Chalking and Film Erosion
Chalking is the white powder that appears on weathered coatings as the resin erodes and pigment becomes exposed. It is rated visually against standard pictures, and it matters for architectural colors because chalk is what makes a facade look washed out. QUV accelerates chalking on polyester systems and is a good way to compare resin quality – super-durable grades chalk far less than standard polyester in the same cycle count.
Correlating Accelerated Hours to Real Life
There is no universal formula that converts QUV hours to years outdoors, because real life depends on latitude, orientation, temperature and pollution. A common rule of thumb treats roughly 1000-2000 QUV hours as a first-order proxy for several years of exterior exposure in a temperate climate, but the honest way to use it is comparatively: tested side by side, the system that loses less gloss and color in the same hours will almost always last longer outdoors. Ask for comparative data rather than a standalone headline.

- Test standard and cycle description (for example ISO 16474-3 or ASTM G154 with UVA-340)
- Total hours and the specific cycle used
- Gloss retention at defined intervals, measured at 60 degrees

Use QUV to compare candidates for the same exposure, not to compare different reports with different cycles. Ask for the data on the exact color and gloss level you will buy, because white and dark colors weather differently. Pair QUV with salt spray and mechanical tests for a balanced picture – weathering predicts appearance, while salt spray and impact testing predict corrosion and abuse resistance. For exterior products, specify a super-durable polyester or PVDF system that comes with documented weathering data.
