Impact and Abrasion: The Gym Is a Physical Test
Dropped dumbbells, sliding benches and stacked plates all punish the coating mechanically. Specify a polyester or hybrid system with a minimum film thickness that survives impact without chipping – typically 80-120 microns on frames and moving parts – and confirm the coating passes an impact test and a taber abrasion check on your own sample before approving the color. Thicker film alone is not the answer; the right resin and proper pretreatment matter just as much.
Sweat and Cleaning Chemicals Are the Real Enemy
Human sweat is corrosive, and gym disinfectants are worse: quaternary ammonium compounds and bleach-based cleaners attack coatings far faster than outdoor weathering in many cases. Require a formulation with good chemical resistance and verify it against the actual cleaning products the facility uses. A salt spray test gives a useful baseline for corrosion, but the most relevant test is the disinfectant wipe test repeated over weeks.
Textured Finishes for Grip and for Hiding Scratches
Textured powder coatings do two jobs in fitness equipment: they give a tactile, non-slip surface on handles and footplates, and they make minor scratches and finger marks almost invisible. Fine texture is popular on frames because it keeps a premium look while forgiving daily contact. If the brand wants a smooth finish, plan for a thicker film and clear handling rules, because smooth gloss shows every mark.

Weld seams need clean-up before coating so the film can cover them without outgassing or roughness.
