PVDF vs Polyester for Architectural Coating

For architectural aluminum – curtain walls, window frames, cladding – the coating is chosen once and expected to last decades. Two systems dominate the discussion: PVDF fluorocarbon and super-durable polyester. Both are excellent; they serve different budgets and warranty requirements. Here is how to choose.

What Each System Is

PVDF fluorocarbon powder is based on a polyvinylidene fluoride resin, the same chemistry used in the highest-performing liquid architectural coatings. Super-durable polyester uses a polyester resin with HAA or TGIC chemistry engineered for long outdoor life. Both are applied as full powder systems in one or two coats.

Weathering Performance

• PVDF offers the best long-term color and gloss retention of any powder system – the standard for 20-year warranties
• Super-durable polyester typically carries 10-15 year warranties with excellent but slightly lower retention
• Both outperform standard polyester, which is not appropriate for facades
• Dark colors and high-exposure orientations separate the two fastest

The Cost Trade-off

PVDF costs more per square meter because the resin is more expensive and the application tolerances are tighter. If the building owner wants a 20+ year warranty on color and gloss – common for prestige projects – PVDF is the answer. For strong 10-15 year performance at a better price, super-durable polyester is the pragmatic choice.

When PVDF Pays for Itself

• Curtain walls and cladding that will never be repainted easily
• Dark or high-contrast colors where fading is most visible
• Coastal and high-UV locations
• Projects where the specification already demands AAMA 2605-level performance

Specifying for Curtain Walls

• State the film thickness as a minimum, not an average, measured per AAMA standards
• Require QUV and salt spray data for the exact color being supplied
• Approve a production sample panel and keep it as the reference
• Ask for the coating supplier warranty in writing with the project name
