Temperature and Time Requirements for Powder Coating Cure

Curing conditions depend on the resin chemistry of the powder. Typical industry ranges are summarized below.

Typical Cure Schedules

  1. Standard thermoset (epoxy / polyester / hybrid / TGIC): 180–200°C (356–392°F) for 10–20 min — most common; baseline often 200°C/10min or 180°C/20min.
  2. Low-cure / low-temperature: 130–150°C (266–302°F) for 15–30 min — for heat-sensitive substrates: MDF, plastics, pre-assembled electronics.
  3. Fast-cure / low-bake: ~200°C for 5–8 min — high-throughput lines; trades energy cost for speed.

Metal Temperature vs. Oven Air Temperature

The cure spec is based on the actual metal substrate reaching and holding the target temperature — not the oven air setpoint. Thick or heavy parts (such as cast aluminum or thick steel) have more thermal mass, so the oven often runs hotter and/or longer just to bring the part itself up to cure temperature before the cure-time clock even starts.

Risks of Under- and Over-Curing

  • Undercure → poor chemical resistance, weak adhesion, and a powdery or soft film.
  • Overcure → yellowing, embrittlement, and loss of gloss, especially with polyester and hybrid systems.

Best Practice

Most powder suppliers publish an actual cure schedule (a temperature/time curve, not just one number) on the technical data sheet — that is the reference to follow rather than a generic industry range, since formulations vary between manufacturers.
